Vibe of the Week: SWAY

The sexiest EDM sound I've ever heard.

Or at least, that's what I originally thought when I listened to this song.

Frankly put: EDM is not my thing. I don't (totally) hate it, but it seldom does anything for me. Even the songs that I like that have some level of EDM in them, I tend to think they would be better without.

When I first listened to this song, I probably only had that kind of thought for two seconds when the hook dropped as (what I thought was) a knee-jerk reaction before my heart slapped my mind for even daring to think such a thing.

But my heart owes my brain a bit of an apology (which is nothing new).

Before any of you go grabbing pitch forks, hear me out. It's not like I think the EDM in this song sounds bad--but I do think the sound is a -tad- overpowering at the chorus. Other than that, I really like the track overall. Besides, by the third listen I got used to it so it was no longer jarring to me (which means I can now fully appreciate the song).

The only reason I didn't process the reason behind my initial aversion to the sound (and the quick bounce back I had after) is because Flowsik came back on and so it totally didn't matter to me anymore.

Speaking of which, Flowsik came through once again. I've liked him since his earlier Aziatix days. Recently, though, I've seen a lot of improvement from that time. Now Flowsik's husky rap and, well, sick flow (sorry), just never fail to get my heart pumping. I'm really happy to see him garnering more momentum here. He brings such a unique sound in the K-hiphop scene.

He's not the only distinctive voice on this track, though. We also got Killagramz killin' it on the bridge to the chorus. This is his second time popping up on a VOW but this time around the tone of the song is much harder. And I have to say--he does both well. Although admittedly his actual appearance initially looked a little out of place in the dark and hard setting of the MV to me (my image of him until now has mostly been cheery and friendly--which there is nothing wrong with that), his rap fit perfectly from the get-go. His higher pitch sound does seem to afford him more flexibility in music tone (in contrast with a deep sound like, for example, Flowsik whose voice really wouldn't fit with a happy-go-lucky sound like 어디). This has probably been a factor in his growing fame.

Moving on to the final player in this banger~

It's unfortunate to say that collaborations often have a high risk of someone being overshadowed... This was not the case this time around, however.

From what I gathered from SMTM 6, Double K had been in a slump of sorts up until recently (though from what I saw his skill was still there--it just seemed maybe the confidence and/or focus was missing).

So I was happy to see his name pop up on my feed...and ultimately I would have to say I'm definitely not disappointed--Double K laid it down like I figured he would (like seriously--I don't know how this man ever started fading from the public eye when I hear him like this).

Anyhoo~

TLDR: this track is hot (and if you don't like EDM, don't let the first listen throw you). Fo' real. Don't take my word for it--listen to it now and see for yourself:

SWAY by Double K (더블케이), Flowsik (플로우식), Killagramz (킬라그램), and Vandal Rock (반달락)

Take it easy,
