Vibe of the Week: 아름다워

So your girl is goin' to Hiphopplaya in April.

As I was lookin' at the confirmed line-up so far, I realized that, though I recognized most of the artist, I couldn't say I was really familiar with EVERY artist (like a few people I had never even heard of, others I maybe heard them featurin' on songs and/or heard a couple of their songs but that was about it).

So I got to thinkin': why don't I spend the rest of the weeks left until the festival exploring the artists that will be performing and spotlight a few of their songs?

So here we are~

We will be kicking of the five week Hiphoppplaya VOW countdown with a song that was so catchy that it forced me to listen to it numerous times last week just to get the song out of my head (which, by the way, if you think trying to find a song you can't remember the name or artist of is hard try doing it in a language you don't even have a basic command of yet--though lucky I did eventually remember I favorited it after a few minutes which sped up the search drastically).

Changmo is a name that I've seen around--you know, watched a few videos here and there, heard him featuring, even got one or two songs of his songs--the usual. This is the first song of his that I have come across, however, that has fully demanded my attention enough where I felt I should actually actively look into his music--especially since he produced this song himself.

Recently I was teaching a video class where the speaker in the video introduced the MAYA method--Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable. The general concept is that if you want to introduce something totally new, you need to make it seem familiar, and vice versa.

When I listen to this song, this is the first thing that comes to mind to explain why I love this song so much (sorry, I know this is getting teacher-y but...I can't turn it off easily anymore, so bare with me). If you guys haven't noticed by now, I really love music that utilizes this kind of method in relation to the hiphop and R&B that I grew up with. I can find a lot of Korean music that has a similar sound to what I grew up listening to but with a Korean and/or more modern twist in it--it's like combining the two things that I love.

In short: This song really does feel familiar and new to me at the same time. It's sexy and has me gettin' it as soon as Changmo starts rappin'. And if you grew up during the same generation of hiphop I did I'm sure you'll appreciate the sound just as much as I do (you know...if you like hip hop...though if you don't I have no idea why you are looking at this anyway--but, you do you).

So here you are--your VOW of the week:

아름다워 by 창모 (Changmo)

Take it easy,
